Application of UAV laser methane inspection program in chemical park safety management

In the production process of large industrial enterprises in chemical parks and petroleum refineries, industrial equipment may be worn out during use, especially pipelines, valves and other parts of the pipeline, cracks, loose and other problems, resulting in methane leakage; in the process of operation, workers may cause methane leakage due to negligence, carelessness, improper operation, etc.; improper maintenance of equipment, such as failure to regularly inspect and replace damaged parts, etc.; pipelines may suffer from corrosion during prolonged use, especially pipelines conveying corrosive substances. may be corroded during prolonged use, especially pipelines conveying corrosive substances, which may lead to a reduction in the wall thickness of the pipeline, thus triggering methane leakage.

Enterprises should strengthen equipment maintenance and management, regularly inspect and replace aging equipment parts, improve the skills and awareness of operators, and ensure that the process flow is reasonable in order to reduce the risk of methane leakage.

# Laser methane inspection program #

The UAV laser methane telemetry instrument is capable of non-contact, long-distance detection of trace methane gas in the air, quickly discovering potential leakage points, and effectively avoiding fire, explosion and other safety accidents caused by leakage.

Using the principle of the Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy technique TDLAS, tunable diode lasers are capable of emitting lasers with variable wavelengths. These lasers are characterized by a very narrow linewidth and their wavelength can be tuned by varying the injection current. By adjusting the laser's injection current, the laser's wavelength can be made to sweep through a specific range that encompasses the absorption peaks of the molecules of the gas being measured (e.g., methane). As the wavelength of the laser sweeps across the absorption peaks of the methane molecules, the methane molecules absorb energy from the laser. The ability of each gas molecule to absorb light at a specific wavelength is determined by its molecular structure and energy level. According to the Beer-Lambert law, the degree to which a gas molecule absorbs light is directly proportional to the concentration of the gas molecule. Therefore, by measuring how much laser light is absorbed, the concentration of methane gas can be deduced. Laser methane telemetry determines the presence and concentration of methane by analyzing the absorption in a gas sample. Because methane molecules selectively absorb laser light at specific wavelengths, the concentration of methane gas can be accurately known by accurately measuring the degree of laser light absorption.

1 Inspection Platform

The UAV platform combined with the LC30Pro laser methane detector enables non-contact measurements compared to traditional electrochemical sensors.

Flight platform: The flight carrier is DJI Jingwei M350 RTK drone. Due to its unique advantages, it can realize uninterrupted and precise inspections during daytime and nighttime. The laser methane telemetry equipment can realize dynamic three-dimensional monitoring of key areas of concern; in terms of data, the GPS coordinates and time of shooting are recorded on the video and photos, which is rich in information and credible data, and facilitates subsequent archiving and forensics. In addition, it supports three-way model adaptation.

Laser methane telemetry: LC30PRO laser methane detector can quickly find trace methane gas in the air, the farthest detection distance can reach 150 meters, and is not affected by environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, pressure, etc., and has a very high stability. 25ms response time ensures that the drone can still maintain a stable and reliable data output in high-speed movement.

2 Back-end monitoring software

Monitoring background system in the inspection process can be real-time view of the drone status (support remote control App terminal / PC browser display), methane measurement data, in case of pipeline leakage, the terminal equipment will automatically alarm and record the data (time, coordinates, leakage concentration, on-site photographs) so as to automatically generate inspection reports at a later stage.

(1) Curve display

Due to the fast response speed of the device, the data can be output 50 times a second. In order to facilitate the observation of the instantaneous concentration value, please turn on the data curve function during the flight of the drone route.

(2) Recording of anomalies

During route flight, once methane gas leakage above the threshold is detected, the drone will automatically take photos and record the current concentration value and latitude/longitude coordinates. Upon completion of the inspection, the leakage point is automatically labeled and the user can click on the icon to view detailed information.

(3) Generate inspection reports

Support to generate inspection report, open the inspection report, all the alarm points are displayed on the map interface according to the latitude and longitude coordinates. Click on an alarm point, the concentration value and the number of the photo taken automatically will be displayed, according to which the alarm point can be further verified, and the report can be exported and deleted via e-mail.
